Chunlong Sun

This artist has a very interesting series titled "celebrity" where they photographed some of the most infamous world leaders in recent history and portrayed them in a way in which we would not expect. I think as a portrait is concerned, these are technically perfect, but conceptually it really adds interest for me. The idea of taking someone who can kill thousands, lead an army, and show them trying to be affectionate, and cuddly with a stuffed animal is amazing.

David Uzochukwu

David's images are very compelling for a 15 year-old. It's motivating to see how successful photography isn't based on age but determination and work. It is evident that thought and effort was put into his images, especially the ones that require precise timing.

Petra Collins

Petra Collins is a 21 year old artist who works out of New York City. She focuses on the life of an average young adult living her life. I absolutely love her photos. Whether portraits or landscapes, she has a great skill of capturing these moments that are intimate and private and yet full of emotion and tension. Coming up to our last critique in this class, she is just the inspiration I need to create my own body of work. Plus, she's roughly my age and it seems she has a keener eye of capturing these intimate moments. She works with film photography and scans them into Photoshop to do very minor color corrections. I love her study of the female form as well, since it highly pertains to the series I am currently working on. She's done a lot of work for various magazines such as Miss Vogue and Vogue Italia; something I hope to do in my future of photography.

Seanen Middleton

Seanen Middleton is a 21 year old photographer from England. The first photo drew my interest to him and his work. Simple, but yet powerful. His work reminds me of emos; creating dark and emotional photos. Although I like the third photo, I don't feel as though it is as strong as the first two. Middleton's work is something I don't see that often, or atleast drew my interest like his photos did.

GABRIELA HERMANN

her use of light and contrasting colors is refreshing. her subjects hold simple poses that are magnified by the color contrast and lighting.

Matthew G Beal

Matthew G Beal is an artist that does a lot of black and white work. I  am a fan of the way he uses shadow in coorelation with the object producing the shadow. Also the rest of his black and whites are very contrasty which I  also like.

Matt Eich

Matt Eich is a local photographer based in Norfolk. His portraits show a variety of how to photograph someone without any outside perspective. It is interesting to see how to take portraits in a different way.

halfanese is a photographer based out of LA and is also a illustrator that uses his photos as drawing references. widely known for work with certain suicide girl models. i chose him because he inspires me to step my drawing/digital game up. and makes beautiful images.

Russ and Reyn

Russ sand Reyn are a photo team that live in New York City. I enjoy the way they use lighting; creating interesting photos that creates different shadows.

Robert Glenn Ketchum

I find Robert Glenn Ketchum as an inspiration because he photographs nature. I have always loved photographing nature and am using it to my advantage with my series. Ketchum mostly does landscaping of various regions. He has photographed Alaska, deserts,  California and the islands of the pacific. One thing i enjoy about his photos is the calming colors. he doesn't seem to over edit his pictures. I feel like he lets the nature do most of the work. Robert ketchup's work has been featured in many galleries including the G2 gallery in California and the Crary art gallery in Pennsylvania. He also has publications and books such as Wood - Tikchik and Rivers of Life.

Luigi Bussolati

Luigi Bussolati

Light continues to be the most important part of a photograph and still the part which I have managed to  ignore. I usually jut let the natural light do it's thing and that does not make for very interesting photographs. For my final series with the openings this may be the key element of what final thing my photos are missing. Bussolati uses light to change our perceptions of space. At night artificial light can be used to make deep shadows or make other shadows disappear making spaces that are spacious appear flat. High contrast and saturation add to the dramatic feel of His photographs. Finding new portals and ways to add light will be what I take away form this photographer.http://www.luigibussolati.com/about/

Ryan McGinley

McGinley is an American photographer who grew up in New Jersey. He started taking pictures in 1999 ant the age of 25. He is self published and has many art shows. His work consist of portraits of nudes. McGinely's subjects are usually preforming in the picture. I personally find his lighting techniques interesting and it inspires me to try something new.

Jake Saxman

I found the image of the girl with the pines on Pinterest by photographer Jake Saxton. Ironically enough he is from RVA. I really enjoy his compositions with females and how he chooses to pose them. I've really taken an interest to the female figure and appreciate seeing it photographed beautifully, yet lacking any serious sexuality. And as for the sky, that picture is unreal. The gradation from top to bottom is stunning. Makes me want to push myself to make more long exposures.

Trent Bell

This series is titled "Reflect." I think these photographs address something that many people, especially myself with they could do, give advice to our younger selves. More importantly I think this series is trying to break down stereotypes of people in jail or prison. Many of the people in the situations do not wish to be there, and would try and change their outcome given the opportunity. I very much appreciate that this series combines something written, letters they write, which can often be deemed contraband, with stunning photographs. It engages me, forces me to combine the words I read with the person sitting before me, I imagine them reading it, I imagine myself receiving it. I am them.

Jeanette Hayes

Jeanette Hayes is an artist who works out of NYC and specializes in photography that pertains to popular culture. I haven't found much of her what we would consider "formal" photography but she concentrates on the mash up of classical art and popular culture. For instance, she has a piece titled "holy scroll" from a series called "come si dice 'webcam girls'." She creates the tension with her pieces but it is comical the way she portrays the classical subjects in a current society. I would like to be able to create my own sort of satirical humor similar to the way Hayes creates her images. I cannot help but laugh at all of her pieces because I understand the world that she puts her subjects into and in a way it mocks today's society and how we deem art now.

Maximilian Rivera

Max is a fashion photographer in New York. His work is gorgeous especially his portraits. With extensive lighting and beautiful contrast, he manages to create a nice balance within his work. He has a keen eye for detail and capturing a simplistic composition to his subject. I really like is work and find it interesting that he just started photographing professional in 2012 and is a self taught photographer. He has come along way with his work and his tumblr displays that.
