Roni Horn
The images below are from the series titled This is Me, This is You. The subject is Horn's neice, Georgia, who agreed to be photographed so long as she was not shown the images. According to Horn, the series was to extend across two years, but she continued to photograph Georgia because she kept evolving. She chose to keep the photos in a Kodak style format, aka close to the face. Horn says she did not direct Georgia, but would instead just show up randomly and photograph her. I find this series inspiring because we are so used to wanting to manipulate and place our subjects when instead we should let that be handled naturally. These images are genuine and show true candidness and rawness. It helped that Georgia was a very expressive person, but I feel as though even the most subtle of expressions, so long as they are natural, could make for beautiful photographs as well.
